What is U-factor? How to Select?

When you are considering the energy efficiency of your windows, you naturally come across questions about U-factor. What is U-factor? And how does it affect energy efficiency? How do we select it? If you come across questions like those, then this blog is for you.

What is U-factor?

A U-factor or U-value is data to measure how much energy efficiency of your windows and doors by rating the combination of transmission of airflow, natural light, and heat gain coefficient. The lower the U-factor is, the more insulation your windows have, which means more energy efficient. The higher the U-factor is, the least energy efficiency is. U-factor is a key element when considering energy efficiency when buying new or replacement windows. U-factor has something to do with both glazing, sealing system, and frame material.

What Is a Good/Bad U-Factor Score?

Generally speaking, a U-factor of a window usually ranges from 0.2 to 1.2. To get a U-factor of 0.2 is really challenging for window manufacturers, and most of the quality windows from most manufacturers are somewhere between 0.2 to 1.2. When the U-factor is over 1.2, that means your windows have a bad U-factor.

What Are the Benefits of a Low U-Factor?

As we agree that the lower U-factor is, the more energy efficient your windows are, energy efficiency is all we are worried about when buying windows and doors. An energy-efficient window makes sure you are able to have a cool summer since there is less cool air leaked out and makes sure you have a warm winter since less hot air is leaked out. An energy-efficient window and door not only makes sure your house is in good condition in summers and winters but also makes sure your windows and doors have longer lifespans since there is less damage can be done. An energy-efficient window and door will save your energy bills and bills for repair in a long term.

You can achieve a low factor by using double-glazing windows, rather than single glazing. Besides, pumping argon gas between the glass panes and Low-E coatings are good ways to lower the U-factor. Of course, triple glazing generally has a lower U-factor than double glazing.

Standard Window

Standard Window Sizes for Different Window Types

When buying windows for your new or old house, you should pay attention to window sizes. Although you can buy a custom window to occupy any frame, getting a standard window size make the process less costly and simpler.

What are Standard Windows?

Standard-size windows are those windows available in consistent size dimensions. They are tailored to fit into most rough openings in your home. They may only be suitable for some window replacements, but it is only wise that manufacturers produce windows that will be functional in most homes. If you do not want to spend large amounts of money on custom windows, always use standard window sizes whenever possible.

4K Ultra HD - Japan Urbex and Drone Flight at an abandoned cable car station

Japan Urbex and Drone Flight at an abandoned cable car station filmed in 4K Ultra HD 30fps.

In countries I am more familiar with this place would have been stripped bare by looters. There were still beers and bottles of spirits behind the bar! I sniffed the scotch myself, its scotch! I didnt drink any as I had to drive later after finishing the hike.

There were glasses, cups and plates, chairs and tables, a TV, some clocks, a wet and dry vacuum cleaner. All sorts of stuff left behind.

Research showed that this place closed in 2014 and hasn't seen any action since then which is clearly visible.

Prefab Home

What Is A Prefab Home?

The Normans did something remarkable during the Battle of Tinchebray. They pulled pieces of preformed materials out of their battleship and built a mighty fortress within a night. Roman de Rou, an epic poem by Wace, includes a description of this event. And that is the first mention of prefab homes in world history.

In Wace's poem, the Earl who erected the first prefab home had brought in beams and pegs in his battleship. As per the poem's description, these beams and pegs had certain qualities. They were already 'planned, pierced, carved and trimmed.' And that is what prefab homes are. You put together a collection of factory-made pieces and erect a house in the quickest possible time.

So, prefab homes aren't new. However, with the aid of technology, they have come a long way since the Norman fortress. And at this time of rising housing and construction costs, prefab homes look like the best solution. Keep reading for more.
